I read a lot.\u00a0 I mean, A LOT.\u00a0 As in, I\u2019m pretty much exhausted every day because I\u2019ll stay up until 1am (or 5am) reading when I should be sleeping because I don\u2019t have any time during the day to satisfy my craving for the written word.<\/p>\n
I also read VERY quickly, a gene I picked up from my Dad.<\/p>\n
Therefore, I\u2019m constantly on the lookout for new books of all types to read.\u00a0 I mostly read sci-fi and fantasy but I\u2019ll crack open pretty much anything.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mind YA novels, they CAN<\/em> be pretty good.\u00a0 Usually there\u2019s not enough sex, but whatever, I can deal with that if there\u2019s enough violence or something else to get me interested.\u00a0 A friend recently recommended that I read The Hunger Games<\/em> by Suzanne Collins.\u00a0 I consulted with other friends via facebook and discovered that many people whose opinion I respect were equally as enthusiastic about the sci-fi series.\u00a0 Kick. Ass.\u00a0 Amazon, here I come.<\/p>\n The trilogy arrived and I devoured them in 3 days.\u00a0 Yes, 3 days.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s why (without giving too much away):<\/p>\n I love fictional (not real, mind you) gratuitous violence.<\/strong><\/p>\n I don\u2019t know why but it makes me soooo happy.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s a generational thing and I grew up with too many violent movies and video games but the more blood and gore, the better.\u00a0 I had a thing for horror movies as a kid and would gleefully watch as some dumb teenager got hacked apart.\u00a0 Haha\u2026I swear I\u2019m not disturbed!\u00a0 Anyhooters, The Hunger Games<\/em> trilogy is full of violence.\u00a0 Kids killing other kids for sport, traps designed to incite more violence, a civil war in which giant mutant human-lizard hybrids are dispatched to tear people limb from limb.\u00a0 And the author isn\u2019t afraid to kill off main characters.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty awesome.<\/p>\n I love strong women.<\/strong><\/p>\n The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, would certainly be the most obvious example of this.\u00a0 She risks her life daily by hunting illegally, doesn\u2019t take shit from anyone, and runs into battle when she\u2019s told to go and hide.\u00a0 She rocks with a bow and arrow.\u00a0 She also freaks out and shuts down on occasion, but wouldn\u2019t you if you were 16 and forced to kill other kids?\u00a0 She\u2019s not the only example either; the series is full of bad ass ladies.<\/p>\n I love love triangles.<\/strong><\/p>\n They\u2019re so juicy!\u00a0 I\u2019ve never watched a soap opera in my life but I can certainly appreciate a good love triangle.\u00a0 I strive to live a drama-free life (cause I don\u2019t need any of that bullshit) so it\u2019s always fun to live vicariously via manufactured drama.\u00a0 I\u2019ve sort of<\/em> been in the middle of love triangles myself and they sucked major monkey balls but when it\u2019s all fake, it\u2019s all good.\u00a0 It\u2019s agonizingly awesome when you want both guys to get the girl.\u00a0 And I REALLY wanted both of these guys to get the girl.<\/p>\n I love when advanced technology meets post war\/apocalyptic\/rudimentary conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n Like in Terminator<\/em>, District 9<\/em> or Cowboys & Aliens, <\/em>there\u2019s just something kind of awesome about conflicting genres joining together to create a whole new brand of bad ass.\u00a0 In The Hunger Games<\/em>, the Capitol utilizes cloaking hover crafts and high-tech showers (Uhmm, hello?\u00a0 Can we please invent these already??) while forcing the Districts to live in poverty and squalor.<\/p>\n I love when books make me cry.<\/strong><\/p>\n \n Not to sound like a pussy or anything, but I cried twice in the first 50 pages.\u00a0 Yeah, I\u2019m pretty embarrassed to admit that, but what the fuck, I admit all kinds of shit on this blog, right?\u00a0 I kind of dig it when books make me cry, it means that they are that<\/em> good and they touched a nerve.\u00a0 There were parts of this series that devastated me.\u00a0 For real.\u00a0 I see a lot of myself in Katniss\u2026.uh\u2026except for the whole killing people part\u2026<\/p>\n At any rate, I haven\u2019t really done any book reviews, but even though I\u2019ve read two books since\u00a0finishing this series about a week ago, I\u2019m still pretty obsessed with it so I figured I\u2019d get it out of my system.\u00a0 At least until the movie<\/a> comes out in March, which I\u2019m uber excited about.\u00a0 My boss\u2019s kid is friends with\u00a0a girl who plays\u00a0one of the Tributes\u00a0and I\u2019m being told good things about the film.<\/p>\n \u201cHappy Hunger Games!
