{"id":2007,"date":"2011-10-13T17:00:46","date_gmt":"2011-10-14T00:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hotnerdgirl.wordpress.com\/?p=2007"},"modified":"2024-02-28T09:29:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T09:29:20","slug":"hello-sweetie-25-take-aways-from-doctor-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hotnerdgirl.com\/index.php\/2011\/10\/13\/hello-sweetie-25-take-aways-from-doctor-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Hello Sweetie! 25 Take Aways from Doctor Who"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2043\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A girl can dream...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you follow the facebook page then you know that I&#8217;ve been more than a little obsessed with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006q2x0\">Doctor Who<\/a><\/em> lately.\u00a0 I tend to do that.\u00a0 Get obsessed with something and then turn around and get obsessed with something else.\u00a0 Thankfully I have AMAZING taste in obsessions.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago I was a <em>Doctor Who<\/em> virgin.\u00a0 Sad, I know.\u00a0 I wish I had the time to invest in all of the amazing science fiction and fantasy shows that are out there, but I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 I have my shows that I follow religiously and for the rest I embark on epic television show marathons.\u00a0 It actually works out pretty well for me.\u00a0 Everything stays nice and fresh in my multiple-franchise-fact-packed little brain and I don&#8217;t have to wait a whole agonizing week for the next episode to come out.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty sweet deal if I do say so myself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And I do.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhooters.\u00a0 I got through Seasons 1-5 (aka Doctor&#8217;s 9, 10, and the first of Doctor 11) ridiculously fast.\u00a0 Seriously&#8230;that whole unpacking and organizing my new house thing took a major productivity dive.\u00a0 Then something horrific happened.\u00a0 Netflix wouldn&#8217;t give me any more episodes. I wasn&#8217;t (and still am not &#8211; stupid broken computer \ud83d\ude41 ) set up to\u00a0BitTorrent\u00a0them and I was really hoping to not have to buy them on Amazon Instant Video\u00a0(just bought a house, remember?)\u00a0 I went through Doctor withdrawals.\u00a0 It was pathetic.\u00a0 But I started organizing my house again which I <em>GUESS<\/em> was a good thing.\u00a0 Pssh.<\/p>\n<p>Then the season finale came and BBCA did a whole marathon of season 6.\u00a0 Thanks GODS!\u00a0 Then I had to go out of town.\u00a0 Gah!\u00a0 How did I ever live without a DVR?\u00a0 I have no idea.\u00a0 Since I got back I&#8217;ve been watching episodes between cleaning, organizing, wedding attending, yadda yadda yadda and I am FINALLY all caught up.\u00a0 Phew!<\/p>\n<p>I can officially proclaim myself a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_Who_fandom\">Whovian<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>So here are my thoughts on the Doctor, his companions, his enemies and all the rest. Watch out, because as River Song would say&#8230;<strong><em>SPOILERS!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Is it a good thing or a bad thing that I will spend an entire day talking like a Dalek?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> I brought this up on the facebook page but it\u00a0warrants repeating:<\/p>\n<p>Does anyone else think it&#8217;s weird that the daughter of the guy who played the 5th Doctor went on to play the daughter of the 10th Doctor and gave birth to the daughter of the guy who played the 10th Doctor?<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Dear Doc #9&#8230;you&#8217;re\u00a0cool in a goofy &#8220;wait, aren&#8217;t you supposed to be a villain?&#8221; kind of way.\u00a0 Your smile\u00a0could light up the room and was really adorable.\u00a0 I feel for you because you got all of the cheesy special effects and that really sucked for you.\u00a0 Plus, you only got one season which was sad but kind of awesome because it made way for Doc #10.\u00a0 I feel bad for admitting that but it&#8217;s true.\u00a0 Still, you&#8217;re the one who dragged me in and solidified my <em>Doctor Who<\/em> addiction and for that, I will always be in your debt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Wait, did I hear it right that the Doctor killed his entire race in order to defeat the Daleks??\u00a0\u00a0That&#8217;s some fucked up shit right there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> OMFG enough with the creepy dolls.\u00a0 What is it with creepy dolls??? Ugh, <a href=\"https:\/\/hotnerdgirl.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/18\/my-top-10-campy-horror-films\/\">I hate creepy dolls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> I&#8217;m not gonna lie, when we first met Donna I wasn&#8217;t a huge fan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2041\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2041\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Donna with Doctor #10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When they ditched her in favor of Martha I thought, <em>yup, right decision!<\/em>\u00a0 Then they ditched Martha and brought back Donna and I thought, <em>wtf? didn&#8217;t we establish that Donna was annoying??<\/em>\u00a0 Then I started to crazy love Donna and I\u00a0was hoping she&#8217;d stick around for a while.\u00a0\u00a0When her storyline ended I cried.\u00a0 Not just because it had ended but because of the way it ended and how they made her go back to being annoying Donna.\u00a0 She had the worst fate of all the\u00a0Companions and\u00a0my heart still breaks for her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Speaking of Martha&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2053\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martha with Doctor #10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I love how the Producers had such a hard on for Freema Agyeman that they cast her as Martha RIGHT AFTER casting her as Adeola, the Torchwood minion who got all Cyberman&#8217;d in &#8220;Army of Ghosts.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Did they think\u00a0we wouldn&#8217;t notice that it was the same chick?\u00a0 Not hardly.\u00a0 I can see why they did it though.\u00a0 Martha was fantastic.\u00a0 I felt bad for her that she was the rebound chick but that&#8217;s the price you pay for being a Companion, you&#8217;re going to get hurt somehow.\u00a0 At least she went all girl power and took off on her own and\u00a0became a\u00a0badass soldier.\u00a0 Now she&#8217;s a lawyer on <em>Law and Order UK<\/em>\u00a0with Lee Adama.\u00a0 Girl gets around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Badger&#8217;s back!!\u00a0 I heart you so much Mark Sheppard.\u00a0 I mean, is there a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0791968\/\">sci-fi show<\/a> that you <em>won&#8217;t<\/em> do??\u00a0 Please say no.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2031\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2031\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frakking badass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> Aside from being a better title than &#8220;The Doctor&#8221; I never\u00a0really got why the show was called &#8220;Doctor Who.&#8221;\u00a0 I mean, sure, people ask &#8220;doctor who?&#8221; every once in a while, but not really enough to make it the title of the show.\u00a0 Now, thanks to a fat blue man with no body, I expect to find out the answer to that question and holy fucking crap I can&#8217;t wait!<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> Dear Doc #10&#8230;I&#8217;m pretty sure I&#8217;m in love with you.\u00a0 You had the best hair, the best clothes (sorry, Doc #11, but bow ties aren&#8217;t <em>that<\/em> cool), the best facial expressions.\u00a0 You speak volumes with nothing but a raised eyebrow.\u00a0 The whole daughter paradox thing creeps me out a little but I could get past that.\u00a0 I get it Rose, I totally get it.\u00a0 I would hit that too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> The thought of fish fingers and custard makes me want to barf.\u00a0 But that scene was fucking brilliant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.<\/strong> I&#8217;m confused&#8230;.is Rory still plastic?\u00a0 Or did he get converted back to being human somewhere along the way and I just missed it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> I will never look at angel statues the same way again.\u00a0 Ever.<\/p>\n<p>Ever.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2033\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ok, fine. You can blink one eye at a time. Smart ass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>14.<\/strong> STFU!\u00a0 Jack is the Face of Boe?!?<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.<\/strong> &#8220;Vincent and the Doctor&#8221; is one of the greatest\u00a0episodes of television I have ever seen. Not so much because of the giant invisible chicken, but because of the last 10 minutes. I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s possible to watch it without shedding a few tears.\u00a0 Tragically beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16.<\/strong> Will someone please sell me some\u00a0hallucinogenic lipstick already?!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>17.<\/strong> Rose is probably my favorite Companion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2048\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rose with Doctor #9 (I had to get him in here somehow)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She&#8217;s adorable in her bucked-tooth, cockney accented way but mostly I think it&#8217;s because of her chemistry with Doctor #10.\u00a0 I cried the ugly cry when he had to leave her in the alternate dimension.\u00a0 Sorry, Mickey, but you simply can&#8217;t replace the Doctor. When she started popping up in the background of season 4 I think I screamed a few times.\u00a0 I miss that combo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18.<\/strong> Amy is a very close second.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2044\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2044\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amy with Doctor #11<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I like her spunky Scottish redhead attitude and her relationship with Rory is adorable.\u00a0 I was ridiculously happy when Amy chose Rory over the Doctor after that weird sort-of-but-sort-of-not love triangle thing they had going on there.\u00a0 If they had kept going in that direction it would have been seriously awkward when River started coming around more often.\u00a0 Rory should wear\u00a0that Last Centurian costume, like, all the time.\u00a0 So cute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>19.<\/strong> Is it just me or is everyone reminded\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/buffy.fandom.com\/wiki\/Gentlemen\">The Gentlemen<\/a> from <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em> when they look at <a href=\"https:\/\/tardis.fandom.com\/wiki\/Silent\">The Silents<\/a> (aka The Silence)?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I swear, this is one of those situations where the DW writers know what the fuck is really going on and the rest of us are all oblivious.\u00a0 Seriously, how many of these fuckers have I killed in my life and I can&#8217;t even remember doing it??<\/p>\n<p><strong>20.<\/strong> Ok really? Giant green alien babies? Sorry Raxacoricofallapatorian&#8217;s, but you&#8217;re just not that scary.\u00a0 Although, I suppose\u00a0you&#8217;re better than the Adipose&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21.<\/strong> Dear Doc #11&#8230;you&#8217;re cuter than #9 but not as cute as #10.\u00a0 But I dig\u00a0your fluttering\u00a0randomness&#8230;I keep debating with myself whether or not\u00a0you&#8217;ve got multiple personality disorder.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still undecided.\u00a0 I like that you&#8217;re angier than your predecessors.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got that whole &#8220;brooding tortured old soul&#8221; thing going on inside mixed with that &#8220;big goofy man-boy&#8221; exterior.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good time for all.\u00a0 Ditch the Stetson but keep the Fez.\u00a0 Fez&#8217;s are cool.\u00a0 It&#8217;s weird how it looks so good on you. I wasn&#8217;t sure how you were going to get out of that whole death thing but I&#8217;m glad you did.\u00a0 And well done on the wife front.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got good taste in women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22.<\/strong> Emperor Palpatine + Nazgul = Headless Monks.\u00a0 Am I right??<\/p>\n<p><strong>23.<\/strong> I&#8217;m conflicted.\u00a0 Now I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;d rather have a Starship or a TARDIS.\u00a0 I used to be so sure that I wanted a Starship but a TARDIS isn&#8217;t restricted by the speed of light or timelines or the need for warp coils. *sigh*\u00a0 I&#8217;m sorry Gene Roddenberry, but I think I need to go with the TARDIS.\u00a0 Now excuse me while I go hang my Trekkie head in shame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2025\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Can&#039;t I just have both?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>24.\u00a0<\/strong>The two-episode story arc where all of the former companions come together to help defeat the Daleks (&#8220;The Stolen Earth&#8221; and &#8220;Journey&#8217;s End&#8221;) is probably my favorite part of the whole series.\u00a0 I love seeing the forces of good coming together to defeat evil and I was so happy to see Rose get her happy ending, even if it meant that Donna lost hers.\u00a0 The part at the end when the Doctor tells Donna&#8217;s family that she was the most important person in the whole universe and that generations of alien worlds will tell stories about her was so poignant.\u00a0 All of her dreams came true and she can never know about it.\u00a0 Ugh.\u00a0 Gutwrenching.\u00a0 And the look on the Doctor&#8217;s face when he gave Rose to his weird hand clone, knowing that he would never see her again but that she could be finally have peace with part of him.\u00a0 Ugh.\u00a0 Gutwrenching.\u00a0 The science fiction aspect is great but what separates Doctor Who from the rest of the sci-fi pack is the emotional wallop it deals you on a regular basis.\u00a0 I lost count of how many times this show has broken my heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25.<\/strong> And last but not least, my hero, the one and only River Song.\u00a0 How does one go about explaining all the of epic awesomeness that is the Doctor&#8217;s wife\/murderer?\u00a0 Although&#8230;technically I guess she didn&#8217;t <em>actually<\/em> murder him&#8230;but you know what I mean.\u00a0 The woman gave up any possibility of ever regenerating again in order to save the Doctor after the first time she tried to kill him (again with the <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">fabulous<\/span> lipsticks!!)\u00a0 And she made the ultimate sacrifice to keep him alive from the Shadows.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just her loyalty that makes her so endearing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s her spunk.\u00a0 And maybe her hair.\u00a0 The Doctor solves problems without violence whenever possible but he has no problem with letting River shoot people.\u00a0 Honestly, would he be able to talk her out of it?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 God I love a woman with a gun.\u00a0 She&#8217;s just as clever, if not more so, than the Doctor.\u00a0 The only woman in the universe that can match him.\u00a0 The fact that their timelines are reversed just adds to the tragic beauty of their romance.\u00a0 They can never truly be together.\u00a0 All they have are stolen moments in time in which they never know how well they&#8217;ll know each other.\u00a0 It&#8217;s practically Shakesperean!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2023\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Goodbye Sweetie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you follow the facebook page then you know that I&#8217;ve been more than a little obsessed with Doctor Who lately.\u00a0 I tend to do that.\u00a0 Get obsessed with something and then turn around and get obsessed with something else.\u00a0 Thankfully I have AMAZING taste in obsessions.
