{"id":2123,"date":"2011-10-24T14:53:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T21:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hotnerdgirl.wordpress.com\/?p=2123"},"modified":"2024-02-27T10:47:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T10:47:00","slug":"remembering-the-great-bird-of-the-galaxy-i-miss-you-gene-roddenberry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hotnerdgirl.com\/index.php\/2011\/10\/24\/remembering-the-great-bird-of-the-galaxy-i-miss-you-gene-roddenberry\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering the Great Bird of the Galaxy&#8230; (I miss you, Gene Roddenberry)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October is a bittersweet month for me.\u00a0 On one hand, there&#8217;s Halloween and all of the fun festivities that the holiday entails.\u00a0 But October is the month when several of my loved ones have passed away so there&#8217;s\u00a0also a lot of sadness.\u00a0 Even though I never met him personally, the one anniversary of someone unrelated to me that I have written in my calendar is Gene Roddenberry\u2019s.\u00a0 Every October 24<sup>th<\/sup> I honor the life of one of my heroes, the man who created and nurtured the glory that is <em>Star Trek<\/em>.\u00a0 This year in particular is notable in that it\u2019s the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of his passing.\u00a0 It\u2019s uber hard to believe that it\u2019s been 20 years already. \u00a0Even though I was a kid I have very vivid memories of the day he died.<\/p>\n<p>So in honor of Mr. Eugene Wesley Roddenberry, here are 16 Facts You Never Knew About Gene Roddenberry, for your nerdy enjoyment:<\/p>\n<p>1. Most people know that Gene was a pilot during WWII but are unaware that he was a civilian pilot for Pan Am after the war and before becoming a Los Angeles police officer.<\/p>\n<p>2. He was involved in at least two plane crashes. \u00a0The first while piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress during the war that crashed due to mechanical failure\u00a0just after take off and killed two people on board. \u00a0The second was while a passenger on a commercial flight from Karachi to Istanbul that crashed in the middle of the Syrian desert in which he was one of only eight survivors.<\/p>\n<p>3. He was the speechwriter for LAPD police chief <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_H._Parker_(police_officer)\">William H. Parker<\/a> and modeled the character of Spock after him.<\/p>\n<p>4. He had affairs with Nichele\u00a0Nichols and Majel\u00a0Barrett in the 1960\u2019s during his first marriage.\u00a0 He and Majel Barrett had been lovers for years when he decided it was time to marry her and asked her to join him\u00a0during a visit to Japan. Gene did not adhere to any particular religion and since they were in Japan they chose to have a Shinto-Buddhist wedding on 6 August 1969. They regarded this as their real wedding, but his divorce was not yet final and they made it legal with a civil ceremony on 29 December 1969.<\/p>\n<p>5. He tried to reboot <em>Star Trek<\/em> with the original cast in 1977.\u00a0 The project was called <em>Phase II<\/em>.\u00a0 The network abandoned the project just before filming was set to start.\u00a0 The project was modified and turned into <em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture<\/em> thanks in large part to the success of <em>Star Wars<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>6.<em> The Next Generation<\/em> character Wesley Crusher got his first name from Gene\u2019s middle name.\u00a0 His first name became the middle name of <em>Voyager<\/em> character Thomas Eugene Paris.<\/p>\n<p>7. In physics a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/zippyfacts.com\/how-far-is-a-roddenberry-and-how-much-shorter-is-it-than-a-light-year\/\">Roddenberry<\/a>\u201d marks the distance traveled at the speed of light during a \u201ctraveler year.\u201d\u00a0 Using the theory of relativity scientists have determined that a \u201ctraveler year\u201d is 70.7 % of a normal earth year or .707 of a light year.<\/p>\n<p>8. Asteroid \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/4659_Roddenberry\">4659 Roddenberry<\/a>\u201d is named after him.<\/p>\n<p>9. Random personal fun fact: I used to have to go to the Roddenberry building on the Paramount Lot for work all of the time.\u00a0 The building is very boring and has nothing indicative of its namesake other than a nameplate.\u00a0 I was very disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>10. He almost died in a house fire with the rest of\u00a0his family when he was a toddler but the milkman came and woke them up in time.<\/p>\n<p>11. He is the first television writer to get star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.\u00a0 (Random personal fun fact: when I lived in Hollywood my apartment was just off of the section of the Walk of Fame that has most of the actors from the Original Series so I walked all over them every day)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">\n<p>12. During WWII, Gene had a friend named Kim Noonien Singh; after the war Kim disappeared, and Gene used his name for some characters in the <em>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0series (Khan Noonien Singh from <em>The Original Series<\/em> and <em>Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan<\/em>, and Noonien Soong from <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>) hoping that Kim would contact him.<\/p>\n<p>13. During WWII, Gene wrote a song lyric &#8220;I Wanna Go Home&#8221; which became popular among the other troops.<\/p>\n<p>14. My favorite Gene Roddenberry quote: \u201cTime is the fire in which we burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>15. In 1992, a portion of Rodenberry&#8217;s ashes flew and returned to earth on the <a title=\"Space Shuttle Columbia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_Shuttle_Columbia\">Space Shuttle Columbia<\/a>\u00a0mission STS-52.\u00a0On April 21, 1997, a Celestis spacecraft carrying a portion of the cremated remains of Roddenberry and 23 others were the first to be launched into Earth\u2019s orbit aboard a <a title=\"Pegasus (rocket)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pegasus_(rocket)\">Pegasus XL<\/a>\u00a0rocket from near the Canary Islands.\u00a0On May 20, 2002, the spacecraft&#8217;s orbit deteriorated and it disintegrated in the atmosphere. Another flight to launch more of his ashes into deep space along with those of Majel Barret Roddenberry is planned for launch in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>16.
