I love Long Beach Comic Con\u00a0because it\u2019s still small enough that comic books are the main focus.\u00a0San Diego Comic Con\u00a0is great, with it\u2019s giant movie and TV show panels but it\u2019s nice to be able to get back to the roots of what comic cons started as\u2026a place to nerd out over your favorite artists and find out what\u2019s next in the genre of, uh, comic books. Plus I got press passes again this year which totally rocks my socks.<\/p>\n
My brother was just as in to\u00a0X-Men\u00a0as I was when we were kids. He even stole my\u00a0Series II trading cards\u00a0(I still haven\u2019t gotten them back\u2026ahem) but he\u2019s never been to a Comic Book Convention. Neither has my nephew, Zeke (yes, that\u2019s a boy, don\u2019t let his\u00a0voluptuous\u00a0locks fool you). So I thought\u00a0LBCC\u00a0would be a nice starter convention for them.<\/p>\n
It was a huge learning experience for me as well. For example, I now know that if I want to sit in on some panels, bringing a 4-year-old is probably not the best idea.<\/p>\n
Case in point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
But that\u2019s okay.\u00a0I loved taking him around and he was totally blown away by all the \u201csupers\u201d (or \u201cshoopers\u201d in 4-year-old speech). He even convinced his dad to whip out his credit card and buy him a\u00a0Green Lantern\u00a0action figure. Of course, then we ran into\u00a0Superman\u00a0AND Green Lantern so Zeke needed a picture with them.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m pretty sure he had a nerdgasm over the sheer volume of action figures surrounding him in every direction.<\/p>\n
We tested Zeke\u2019s superhero knowledge often. It\u2019s become apparent that our entire family is on a mission to make sure this child is a geeky as humanly possible.<\/p>\n
If you follow the\u00a0facebook page, you probably saw my announcement that I managed to convince my brother and sister-in-law to give\u00a0Doctor Who<\/em>\u00a0a try. I\u2019m proud to say that they are officially obsessed.<\/p>\n There was an artist there named\u00a0Matt Stevens\u00a0who creates and makes metal fan art. It\u2019s basically a crapload of little dots engraved in metal. The pictures don\u2019t do them justice, they are really quite stunning.<\/p>\n If I was a wealthy woman I would have bought the whole lot because they all went together in big montages and he had them for most of my favorite TV shows. Since I am not a wealthy woman, I settled on a small one of the 10th Doctor in all of his sheepishly adorkable glory and a small one of Wash in the midst of a sudden but inevitable betrayal.<\/p>\n We just happened to walk by\u00a0Jesse Blaze Snider\u2018s booth while Zeke was being fussy and he was sweet enough to give The Zekester a free\u00a0Toy Story<\/em>\u00a0comic that he\u2019d written. We ended up chatting with him for a few minutes. He\u2019s got a couple of projects coming up, including one about heavy metal bands featuring some of our favorite\u00a0Asgardians\u00a0that I\u2019ll be keeping an eye out for.<\/p>\n Yes, we started pinning Zeke\u2019s bangs back with a bobby pin. His mother refuses to cut his hair.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n We saw a couple of celebs including\u00a0Jason Faunt\u00a0aka Wes Collins aka Red Time Force Power Ranger.<\/p>\n And a personal favorite of mine,\u00a0Lance Henriksen. Lance has many, many, many amazing credits to his name but he is best know to the masses as\u00a0Bishop\u00a0from the\u00a0Alien<\/em>\u00a0franchise. Lance was extremely nice. He kept calling Zeke \u201cshe\u201d and was mortified when I gently informed him that I was holding my nephew, not my niece. Zeke seemed to get a kick out of that\u00a0<\/p>\n They had a whole\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n Including a game where you could shoot various Troopers of the Clone and Storm variety using a vast array of\u00a0Nerf weaponry.<\/p>\n They had a Jawa hanging out with them but he got the hell out of Tosche just before the shooting started.<\/p>\n Around the corner was a laser tag obstacle course. I can only imagine how ridiculous this looked to my brother (he\u2019s a Marine). I should ask him.<\/p>\n Then this happened.<\/p>\n Oh, Leatherface\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On to costumes!<\/p>\n I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s because I went on Sunday or if there were just fewer cosplayers this year, but the costumed character selection was a bit limited. But here\u2019s the best of the best of what I saw.<\/p>\n Bane from\u00a0The Dark Knight Rises<\/em>.<\/p>\n The Joker from\u00a0The Dark Knight<\/em>.<\/p>\n Rick and Daryl from\u00a0The Walking Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n A pair of sexy lady\u00a0Punisher\u2018s. I really wanted a picture of Zeke standing between them but he didn\u2019t want to get his picture taken unless me or my brother was holding him. Of course, once I picked him up he was totally stoked to be next to such hotties.<\/p>\n I felt a happy disturbance in the Schwartz when I saw this guy with his\u00a0singing and dancing Chestburster\u00a0from\u00a0Spaceballs<\/em>.<\/p>\n The 11th Doctor. He was facing away from me and I quietly said \u201cDoctor?\u201d and he immediately turned around like he responds to that name all the time. We also crossed paths with a pretty excellent 4th Doctor as we were walking in. Wish I\u2019d gotten a picture of him but alas.<\/p>\n Keeping with the sci-fi, we ran into this guy pulling a\u00a0CMDR William Riker.<\/p>\n Zeke was a little confused by this Jedi. Either that or he was super jealous of his epic lightsaber.<\/p>\n This is not the child you\u2019re looking for. Move along.<\/p>\n Barbie Fett?<\/p>\n But the winner of the \u201cBest Comic Con Costume Ever Award\u201d goes to this chick. Yes, that\u2019s a chick.<\/p>\n That\u2019s it for costumes. Here\u2019s a look at the fun stuff I accumulated.\u00a0Iron Man<\/em>\u00a0fingerless gloves hand-crocheted by Bobbie Bomber and sold by\u00a0Geeky Mamas. \u00a0A pink-skeleton-Sailer Jack-with bomb t-shirt that was on sale. My previously mentioned metal art. And a stuffed Thor (not included in the picture is the pretty awesome Thor print that came with the stuffed godlet).<\/p>\n Every convention I go to I seek out my favorite nerdy t-shirt. This time it was won by this one.
