What\u2019s that you say? It\u2019s been months since a \u201cHot Nerd Girl Podcast\u201d and almost a year since a\u00a0\u201cGratuitous Nerdity\u201d\u00a0post and you just can\u2019t live without the glowing banter that is Tracy and Darcy? Well wait no longer! Tonight we had the opportunity to Instant Message about last nights\u00a0Gotham<\/em>\u00a0premier.\u00a0Premie?\u00a0Premiere.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thanks for letting me write the intro, Trace. You most likely won\u2019t regret it! \u2013 Darcy<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Ugh\u2026\u00a0Gotham<\/em>\u2026 pilot\u2026. so bad\u2026 80\u2019s B-movie bad\u2026.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Really?? I liked it!<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Ah,\u00a0Tracy\u2026. the eternal optimist\u2026 I\u2019m going to keep watching, buuuutttt\u2026.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s gonna be great, I have faith\u00a0<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0You should do a blog post about new shows called \u201cKeep the Faith\u201d<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Hahaha! I watch so few new shows though. Only got to watch\u00a0Gotham<\/em>\u00a0because I had to make buttons for\u00a0Long Beach Comic Con\u00a0this weekend.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s a fast show too.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah it is. seems like a lot of the focus will be on Cobblepot which is interesting. I wish that we had seen more of Selena.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0They intro\u2019d a loooot of main villains in an hour. Too many, in my book. And honestly, I don\u2019t think they had to kick off the series with the Wayne\u2019s deaths. That could have been a midseason thing. or like, episode 3. I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m just not seeing a ton of creativity with it yet.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Is Fish Mooney a new character? I\u2019m a Marvel girl but I used to read some\u00a0Batman<\/em>\u00a0and I don\u2019t remember her from the comics. I thought they were introduced pretty organically though. We barely saw Riddler, for example.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, barely. And Ivy, barely. And Selena too. I just think they were rushed. And wanted to get enough hooks in because, I suppose, Gordon isn\u2019t enough of a hook?<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, I feel like it\u2019s a cop show that just happens to be set in\u00a0Gotham<\/em>. The Boy Scout cop and the \u201cis he or isn\u2019t he crooked\u201d cop partner. They don\u2019t like each other but they start to grow on each other by the end. All cop shows start off with the case, this case just happens to be the Wayne\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, that\u2019s what it\u2019s supposed to be. I just think starting with the Wayne\u2019s is too easy, I guess.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0I think they did that because we all know what happens, why not get it out of the way?<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0To me, that\u2019s midseason or finale time. After your attached to Bruce and can feel his loss.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Is it a requirement that we HAVE to see Martha\u2019s pearls bouncing around?<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, but that\u2019s my point. That\u2019s a short hand assumption. That we all know what happens to the Wayne\u2019s. That\u2019s not good story telling. It\u2019s why\u00a0Man of Steel<\/em>\u00a0sucked.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Who doesn\u2019t though?? Cave dwellers??\u00a0Man of Steel<\/em>\u00a0is a whole other bag of worms lol. We never get to know the Wayne\u2019s though, either in the movies or the comics, they need to maintain that air of mystery, that we\u2019ll never know exactly what Bruce lost. We experience his relationship with them through his pain and his vengence. He basically becomes a psychopath, if we get to know his parents then we\u2019ll have opinions of them and that\u2019s counterproductive to the story.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Isn\u2019t that a fresher take though? Otherwise, why are we bothering? Gordon is getting changed because we have, through this show and other comics, his past. When he first showed up, he\u2019s the Commissioner. Why bother going back? \u2018Cause it\u2019s unexplored territory. And if they\u2019re going to keep retreading the same ground again and again, they have to find new stories to explore.\u00a0Batman Begins<\/em>\u00a0did. At least somewhat.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0They are mixing it up though. We\u2019ve never seen Bruce as a kid except in flashbacks and the brief murder scene. They are taking inspiration from the comics, but for the most part, everything is different.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s not enough of a reason NOT to show his parents though. They probably will flashback; I just disagree with how they\u2019re handling it right now.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0The Wayne\u2019s aren\u2019t the focus of the show though, the aftermath of their murder is \u2013 why drag that out?<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Depends on how much time they\u2019re going to spend with Bruce. I don\u2019t think you have to spend a TON of time, but I think assuming we give a crap about Bruce because we all already know the backstory is lazy writing. This is long, but if you ever get a chance, you should check it out:\u00a0http:\/\/badassdigest.com\/2013\/07\/03\/film-crit-hulk-man-of-steel\/<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0See, I disagree. I think there were areas that were lazy writing (why does the mob ALWAYS have a meat locker, for example) but I don\u2019t think starting the show off by killing the Wayne\u2019s is lazy, I think it thrusts us right into the heart of the story and the whole reason why we\u2019re there\/watching it in the first place. I don\u2019t need to see Martha be the perfect Mom and Thomas playing catch with his perfect son. I want to see the nitty gritty world of Gotham and see Alfred have to step up and be Bruce\u2019s rock and Bruce have to grow up too quickly.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s all just choices. I\u2019d like to see some slightly shady stuff on the Wayne\u2019s part, perhaps, that he wasn\u2019t the cleanest nicest guy in the world. Or at the very least, dialogue that doesn\u2019t sound like it was written by a 10 year old in the 80\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Ok, well THAT sounds interesting to me. Like Bruce sees his parents as perfect, but there\u2019s a reason why Thomas is the richest guy in town. The seedy side that we never know about and Bruce never knows about. The dialogue sounds very 1940\u2019s gangster movie to me.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, it was pretty rough.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0I think it was miles ahead of a CW show though. But this is FOX, so instead of 10 seasons of superhero origin story,\u00a0it\u2019ll probably get canceled\u00a0halfway thru the first season.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Really? I like\u00a0Arrow<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0I like that not everyone is perfectly pretty. That differs from the CW.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, I didn\u2019t like\u00a0Arrow<\/em>\u00a0to start, but it\u2019s gotten better.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019ve been told I need to give\u00a0Arrow<\/em>\u00a0another shot. I gave up after 2 episodes. I will say that DC is doing way better on TV than in the cinema \u2018verse.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, I\u2019m almost all the way through\u00a0Arrow<\/em>. I watch it while I run.\u00a0Flash<\/em>\u00a0I\u2019ve seen the pilot, which also moves at a break neck pace. I\u2019m just a firm believer that most of the time you need two hours. Imagine if\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0had a one hour pilot as opposed to a two hour pilot.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0To establish the characters and the universe.<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0Well, the 2 hour pilot of\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0was God awful sooooo\u2026. lol<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, it might improve it actually.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0You should watch\u00a0Flash<\/em>\u00a0while you run, might motivate you to run faster\u00a0<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0Ha. Ha. Ha.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0So do you have hope for\u00a0Gotham<\/em>\u00a0or do you think that it\u2019s all downhill from here?<\/p>\n

Darcy:<\/strong>\u00a0I have hope.\u00a0Arrow<\/em>\u00a0has improved. If\u00a0Parks and Recreation<\/em>\u00a0can overcome what I thought was a fairly flawed, shit copy of\u00a0The Office<\/em>\u00a0from the first 1.5 seasons, then any show can do it.<\/p>\n

Tracy:<\/strong>\u00a0I know that I\u2019m the eternal optimist (most of the time) but I have hope too. I think compared to many pilots, it\u2019s a pretty strong start and now they can get into the meat of the story. And hopefully FOX gives it a good shot before they up and\u00a0cancel it\u00a0if it doesn\u2019t immediately get great ratings, but I think it\u2019ll be ok in that regard, at least in the beginning.
