Hollywood can\u2019t get enough of him, but he\u2019s not a snob about it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned in my previous post <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hotnerdgirl.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/18\/my-top-10-campy-horror-films\/\">Top 10 Campy Horror Films<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, there have been over 80 film adaptations of King Stephen\u2019s work.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t just include literal adaptations like <em>Carrie<\/em> or <em>The Shining<\/em>, but less obvious ones like <em>Stand By Me<\/em> and <em>Shawshank Redeption<\/em> (a personal favorite) both based on short stories.\u00a0 He pops up in pop culture when he feels like it and on his own terms and isn\u2019t afraid to criticize or make fun of himself.\u00a0 He relishes in cameos and guest appearances that have significance for him like <em>The Simpsons<\/em> and <em>Fever Pitch<\/em> (he\u2019s a die hard Red Sox fan \u2013 I\u2019m looking at you Troi) while rooting for the up and comers in his \u201cPop of King\u201d column in <em>Entertainment Weekly.<\/em> And it\u2019s not just film and television that has a hard on for Stephen, Marvel Comics took <em>The Dark Tower<\/em> and ran with it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop quiz, bitches: Who is Stephen King\u2019s favorite Superhero?<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-705\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For my sister-in-law Troi, also a die hard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>4. He takes a lickin\u2019 and keeps on tickin\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone knows that Stephen got hit by a car while walking down a rural road near his house back in 1999.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure we all had a vision or daydream (or 10) of his wife Tabitha going all <em>Misery<\/em> on him.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty much miraculous that he can walk.\u00a0 While recovering, he wrote my favorite of his novels, <em>Dreamcatcher<\/em>.\u00a0 He also felt thankful that he was rich and wouldn\u2019t have to worry about his medical bills.\u00a0 Then he realized that a lot of other writers aren\u2019t rich so he created the Haven Foundation, an organization that helps freelancers who can\u2019t pay for their medical bills.\u00a0 I\u2019m always happy to see <a href=\"https:\/\/hotnerdgirl.wordpress.com\/donate-to-operation-gratitude\/\">nerds helping people<\/a> so I gladly tip my hat to Mr. King for that one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop quiz, bitches: What kind of accident did Stephen King witness as a child that many believe served as inspiration for his novels?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Fuck yeah he\u2019ll write a 1500 page, 19 lbs. book and I dare you to tell him he can\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He has an ability to make grown ups want to sleep with the lights on (if they can even sleep at all) and worry about their pets going all Cujo on them. \u00a0I can understand why people would think twice about crossing him.\u00a0 Remember that guy that hit him with his van?\u00a0 Yeah, he died on Stephen King\u2019s birthday. \u00a0So when a book publisher gets word that an author is writing a behemoth of a book, he\u2019s probably going to freak out a little.\u00a0 Unless that author is Stephen King and people have a tendency to DIE ON HIS BIRTHDAY.\u00a0 Following in the footsteps of <em>War and Peace<\/em> and <em>Sacajawea<\/em>, Sir Stephen wrote a book of epic proportions with <em>Under the Dome<\/em>.\u00a0 Oh the tangled webs we weave but none weaveth like the Kingeth.\u00a0 For a complicated web of characters and plots, <em>Under the Dome<\/em> was surprisingly easy to read and a TV mini-series produced by Steven Spielberg is already in the works.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop quiz, bitches: Where did Stephen King get the name for the character Jim Rennie in Under the Dome?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. He says what\u2019s on his mind and all others be damned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephen King just doesn\u2019t give a damn about what other people think of him.\u00a0 He does what he wants and he makes no apologies for it.\u00a0 He has never been secretive about his past with addiction and even admitted basing the character of Jack Torrance in <em>The Shining<\/em> on himself at his alcoholic worst.<\/p>\n<p>His view on people is such:\u00a0 &#8220;I think that we&#8217;re all mentally ill. Those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better &#8211; and maybe not all that much better after all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He has insulted the writing ability of Stephenie Meyer, questioned the literacy of the US Army and been very outspoken against the war in Iraq, all without fear of those who would challenge him.\u00a0 He has a quick wit and a mass of minions who are ready and willing to heed his command to tell opponents to shut up.\u00a0 I might not always agree with him but he\u2019s got balls and that I respect.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop quiz, bitches: What was the name of Stephen King\u2019s student newspaper column at the University of Maine?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-695\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><em><em><\/em><\/em><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No. You can&#039;t have him. He writes for people with a sense of humor, not for snobby elitists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He once called himself &#8220;the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries.&#8221;\u00a0 An author who focuses on emotion rather than intellect even though his writing is very, very smart.\u00a0 He started out as a high school teacher and it is my belief that he writes for them as opposed to the book critics.\u00a0 He uses profanity with sophisticated relish, a talent that brings great joy to me and my love for a well placed f-bomb.\u00a0 He delights his most loyal readers by connecting people and places throughout his novels.\u00a0 Richard Tozier, for example, appears in <em>Dreamcatcher<\/em>, <em>The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Duma Key<\/em>, and <em>It<\/em>.\u00a0 His loyalty lies with his fans and his fans are extremely loyal in return.\u00a0 I heart you Stephen King.\u00a0 I even heart your cell phone zombies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop quiz, bitches: Who is the author that most influenced Stephen King?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I recognize terror as the finest emotion and so I will try to terrorize the reader.
