In honor of Halloween, or Samhain, or however you choose to refer to it, here is my list of the most awesomely cheese-stastic and hi-larious horror flicks of all time.<\/p>\n
10. Anything based on a Stephen King novel<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>From Carrie to The Mist I counted 82 (!!!) film adaptations of Mr. King\u2019s work.\u00a0 That\u2019s no small shit.\u00a0 Some of them are the best horror films of all time like Misery and The Shining.\u00a0 Some are cheese-tastic wonderlands like It and Pet Cemetery.\u00a0 They\u2019re all pretty freaking scary. \u00a0Mr. King gets on the list, if for nothing else, than for the sheer volume of work based on his novels.<\/p>\n 9. Tales of the Crypt: Bordello of Blood<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>A vampire brothel being run out of a funeral home.\u00a0 Corey Feldman finally getting his turn at vampire glory.\u00a0 Dennis Miller running a private detective business out of a porn theatre.\u00a0 Angie Everhart as the mother of all vampires.\u00a0 What more do you need?\u00a0 Besides some sunblock that is.<\/p>\n 8. The Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/strong><\/p>\n Some people will argue with me about whether or not this counts as a horror film.\u00a0 It\u2019s my list and I say it counts.\u00a0 So there.\u00a0 Besides, it\u2019s got \u201chorror\u201d in the title.\u00a0 I don\u2019t feel that I need to explain any further.\u00a0 It\u2019s got music and dancing and sci-fi and Tim Curry in drag.\u00a0 In 2005 it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by non other than our own Library of freakin\u2019 Congress and was declared \u201cculturally and historically significant.\u201d\u00a0 How many musical horror comedy rock operas can say that, hmmm?<\/p>\n 7. Child\u2019s Play<\/strong><\/p>\n When I was a kid we had a doll that came from some family member long gone and had been passed down through the generations.\u00a0 This doll was kept in a pillowcase in the far reaches of my closet because I was the girl and Lord forbid my brother have a doll in the back of his closet that no one will ever see.\u00a0 I got curious one day and pulled down said doll in pillowcase.\u00a0 I remember seeing the back of the head first.\u00a0 That in itself was pretty creepy.\u00a0 I turned the doll around and her eyeballs had fallen out of their sockets and were rolling around in the back of her head.\u00a0 They suddenly stopped rolling and were staring straight at me.\u00a0 Needless to say, I have never and will never look upon the face of that doll again.\u00a0 Dolls are creepy.\u00a0 Period<\/p>\n 6. Gremlins<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>What child of the 80\u2019s didn\u2019t want a mogwai as a pet when they were a kid??\u00a0 This movie contained enough unforeseen violence that it helped convince the Motion Picture Association of America to reform its rating system.\u00a0 Drops of water, not great but manageable for a while.\u00a0 Food after midnight.\u00a0 Baaaad.\u00a0 The main lesson gleaned from this film: never buy anything in Chinatown.<\/p>\n 5. The Lost Boys<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh, the horror that is teen angst.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure \u201cSanta Carla\u201d is supposed to be Venice, CA.\u00a0 Gang-ridden or not, how many coastal cities in California do you know of that would let an earthquake crumpled hotel just sit there instead of building something else on the property?\u00a0 Just sayin\u2019.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bunch of brat packers running around looking cute and causing trouble long before Stephenie Meyer ever dreamed up her saccharine covered Twilight vamps.\u00a0 My favorite character is Grandpa.\u00a0 I may be a vegetarian but I can appreciate some good taxidermy.\u00a0 He gets the last word: \u201cOne thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach\u2026all the damn vampires.\u201d\u00a0 Grandpa\u2019s been around the block a few times.<\/p>\n 4. From Dusk Till Dawn<\/strong><\/p>\n Personally, I love Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez (when he\u2019s not making stupid kiddie films).\u00a0 They are rather good at satisfying my desire for action, gore, and lewd comedy.\u00a0 I think that sometimes people forget that George Clooney was even in this movie\u2026what with the Cary Grant Junior image that has been built up around him\u2026something I\u2019m sure he finds hysterical.\u00a0 Hot Mexican vampire strippers.<\/p>\n I\u2019m sorry, do I need to say anything else?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n 3. Drag me to Hell<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>I hear the theatrical version of this movie fell apart at the end.\u00a0 Luckily I didn\u2019t see it in the theatre and instead rented the Director\u2019s Cut.\u00a0 This is not a movie for those with weak stomachs but if you can handle your gore and an ungodly amount of disgusting fluids going into a pretty girl\u2019s mouth, then this is the movie for you.\u00a0 It stars Alison Lohman as a really sweet girl who really pisses off an old gypsy woman the first time she tries to be tough at her job.\u00a0 I really hope I never piss off an old gypsy lady.\u00a0 The demon, Lamia, tortures you for three days before doing exactly what the title entails.<\/p>\n 2. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark<\/strong><\/p>\n This was one of my very favorite movies as a kid.\u00a0 So much so that I actually dressed up as Elvira for Halloween one year.\u00a0 Talk about goth done right.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to believe that Cassandra Peterson was 37 years old when this movie came out!\u00a0 The moment that will be with me until the day I die?\u00a0 When Elvira chucks her stiletto high heel and it lodges in her Great Uncle Vincent\u2019s forehead.\u00a0 Brilliant.<\/p>\n 1. Evil Dead series<\/strong><\/p>\n My explanation for this need only go as far as the name \u201cBruce Campbell\u201d but for those who haven\u2019t seen it I will explain further.\u00a0 Horror and comedy together (intentionally) is Sam Raimi\u2019s genius.\u00a0 Inspired by low-budget horror films at drive-ins and HP Lovecraft, he created an epic trilogy of awesomeness centered around Ash (Bruce Campbell) and a series of deadites created by Ex-Mortis.\u00a0 Watch all three (Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) in a row and it will be the best Halloween you\u2019ve ever had.\u00a0 My favorite lines: \u201cHoney, you got reeeeaaal ugly!\u201d and \u201cGood. Bad.
