It could happen….

About a week before The Avengers came out in theatres I participated in a World’s Best Podcast discussion about the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. We discussed Hulk (briefly), The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America. We also got into why the Marvel movies seem to be outdoing the DC movies (with the notable exception of the Christopher Nolan Batman films).

I was still sick when we did this so there are moments when my voice cracks and I sound like a 13 year old boy going through puberty. Since I typically dress like a 13 year old boy it was actually pretty fitting.

You might also notice that I got really excited and more talkative during the Thor part. What can I say? He’s my favorite comic book character 😉

    I may be crazy, but I think Avengers and the Spider-Man reboot are going to beat the Bat this summer. Nolan’s ‘grounded in reality’ super-hero flicks are ever so slightly paling in comparison to the amazing spectacle of Marvel’s efforts. Consider that the last Batman film, while excellent, suffered from a very uninteresting Batman. After Joker, Dent, and Gordon – Batman was the fourth most engaging character in the movie. As a nemesis, Bane doesn’t have the pull of the Joker (and it was going to be tough to outshine Ledger’s performance anyway). I’ll still go see it, but I’ve seen Avengers twice, and will probably try to catch it again with my son when it gets to the cheap theaters. Nolan’s work has never received that big a chunk from my pocket money.

    The darker Batman that the Nolans put up, like Frank Miller’s Dark Knight in the comics, is an acquired taste… I like it, kinda sorta, but I’m not “in love” with it.
    The Avengers, on the other hand, is fast, fun, furious, funny, fresh, and other alliterative words starting in “f” signifying new and wonderful.
    They should give Joss Whedon whatever he wants to do the sequel, and leave him alone… the track record of the man, with Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible, and now The Avengers shows he knows what he’s doing, and he can deliver the goods as well.
